General Teaching and Learning Online This is an online handbook for UMass Faculty, but can be downloaded.  It has chapters on teaching in online environments, teaching an online course, teaching and learning challenges, assessing student learning, and resources.

This is a comprehensive site that addresses a number of issues regarding distance learning: teaching strategies, instructional development, evaluation, research, and various technologies.
Online Cl@ssroom This site provides practical advice to help you improve your online courses. Each issue features tips and insights from successful online course developers and instructors on topics such as course design, facilitation, assessment, interaction, student support and use of emerging technologies.
A Synthesis of Sloan-C Effective Practices This document summarizes the recommended practices for online learning.
Blended Learning Effective Practices This site from Sloan-C provides a number of links to other resources on effective practices for blended learning.
Teaching Online This University of Central Florida site supports faculty teaching online.  Although designed for faculty at UCF, there are a variety of resources here that can be of use for anyone thinking about online teaching.
Virtual Resource Site for Teaching with Technology This site, from University of Maryland University College, contains two modules.  One provides information about the selection and use of various Web-based media, such as text, audio, video, still images, animated graphics, applets, and scripts, to accomplish a number of different learning strategies.  The other focuses on delivery and features faculty interviews about realities and successful practices in online course delivery.
Teaching and Learning on the Internet This site from University of Colorado at Denver has a number of links to articles about online teaching.
The World-Wide Web: Its Uses as a Teaching Tool This article is somewhat dated, but comes from Oxford University.  It discusses why and how to teach on the web.
A Gallery of Best Practices Essays This is a group of essays from Harvard University that address the issue of the use of technology in a variety of classes.
Distance Learning This site, from University of Washington, contains links to teaching and learning bulletins as well as web guides to teaching distance learning resources.

Preparation Instructional Design for Online Courses This is a PowerPoint presentation from University of Illinois that contains some excellent information about preparing for an online class and also contains examples.
17 Elements of Good Online Courses. This is a brief outline for how to prepare for an online course.
Instructional Strategies for Online Courses This site contains ten instructional strategies which have been effectively used in the traditional classroom and can likewise be used in the online learning environment.  It includes issues such as learning contracts, discussion, mentorship, etc.
Principles of Online Design This is a complete guide to designing an online course including, introduction, instructional design, interaction & feedback, instructional media, and course management.  It is designed for Florida Gulf Coast faculty but others may benefit from the materials.

Engaging Students in Discussion Online The Center for Instructional Development and Research at University of Washington Catalyst have worked together with UW instructors to plan and assess the use of the online threaded discussion tool in their classes. In interviews with students and consultations with instructors, they learned that many instructors value online discussion because it encourages more students to participate and engage more deeply with course material. They also identified key questions to help instructors take the most advantage of online discussions to promote student learning.
